History
The Regiment was formed in the combination of the 34th and 11th infantry regiments in 1869. Thus, from this time forward, this regiment has been deployed in every engagement the United States has been involved in. It was involved in the Battle of San-Juan Hill in the Spanish American War, and was integral to Meuse-Argonne Campaign during World War 1. The unit has won over 15 awards from many of their conflicts, some even from other nations. During World War II, the 16th Infantry Regiment was one of the first units to be sent overseas, resulting in their involvement in the North African and Italian Campaigns.
World War II
As part of the North African Campaign, the regiment was the very first regiment to land. They quickly were a part of an enormous conflict. In one such instance, the regiment engaged a number of German Companies. With the aid of armor, the unit was able to kill 270 and capture 700 German soldiers without a single casualty. The 16th Infantry was also the first group to land in Sicily, resulting in a large amount of losses. After Sicily, the regiment took part in the invasion of Normandy. From there, the unit continued to fight as part of the 1st Infantry Division till they ended the war in Czechoslovakia.
